All Souls' Day

November 2, the day which Roman Catholics pray for the dearly departed. After a pilgrim told Odilo, abbot of Cluny, of an opening in a cliff to the infernal regions where the groans of the tormented could be heard, Odilo appointed the day following November 1st 998 (All Saints' Day) to be set aside for the benefit of those who were trapped in Purgatory.
