Considered both a methodology of code production as well as a philosophy of sharing for the common good, Open Source is the practice of making the source code of a product or application available to all. This approach was born from the rapid growth of computer technology, the internet, and the need for creating shared protocols as well as ways to account for licensing and intellectual property rights. The most widely known Open Source software would be Linux.
