Sentence Diagraming
The archaic but nevertheless oftentimes pleasant analysis of a sentence, diagraming is a means not an end in itself. Some authorities feel that it has little value, but its graphic form has a pleasing logistical balance that may appeal to some students. Any sentence may be fodder for the serious diagrammer, although the practice gets more complicated as one moves from this elementary example, "I ate the apple," to constructs from authors such as Gertrude Stein and James Joyce. Try it; you may like it.
