Fairies, fey, fay, fae etc. are a type of mythical or spiritual being. The word "fairy" derives from old English, via old French and ultimately from the late Latin "fata" meaning "fates." Fairies usually appear like humans (though usually very small) but have magical powers. In popular culture they are usually depicted as very small winged, youthful, beautiful and angelic beings. In past times, however, fairies were thought of as more malicious beings and were accused of a variety of mischief.
